Go to your underwear draw and I dare say when it comes to tights you will find the usual suspects. There will be the ever practical staple that is the ten pairs of timeless black opaques that you own. The obligatory nude or tan coloured ‘pantyhose’ style tights, some dodgy sheer black tights that were purchased before Lycra was routinely added and would make Nora Batty seem fashionable. A pair of stockings reserved for a sexy first date and a few pairs of fashionable fishnets and some perky patterned Pretty Pollys. Not forgetting of course your reliable and indispensable array of ’support’ and tummy control hosiery.

However if you were to combine the ever evolving fickle finger of fashion with a dash of funky celebrity style (think Kirstie Allsopp, aka Location Location Location aka the Queen of tights with colour) you could brighten and enhance your tights collection with some fabulous colours. Nothing says “I am a confident, bright, sunny fashionable woman” like a pair of yellow tights.

Give your winter wardrobe a lift with some Yellow Gipsy 40 Denier Coloured Opaque Tights. Or for a subtler sexier look try some Jonathan Aston Coloured Micronet Tights, smoother than fishnets, these tights will have you feeling funky, fashionable and foxy all day long! For luxury and comfort go for Cette Dublin Fashion Tights, made from Microfibre with gusset and reinforced toes, they are comfortable, soft to the touch and will keep you warm all winter long. Whatever your brand, do not be afraid to embrace Yellow Tights.

Coloured tights are an ideal way to personalise your outfit and can often provide the finishing touch. There is a great variation of coloured tights from pale shades such as white through to bold statements of colour in electric blue or a shocking shade of yellow, green, or purple. A benefit of coloured tights is that you can choose a colour that suits your skin tone and your figure. Dark colours such as black or navy tights make legs look much more shapely and thinner, but brighter and lighter colours show you’re not afraid to try new shades and have the confidence to carry it off.

Coloured tights can have a different impact depending on whether the material of the tights is thick or thin. Thick opaque tights are fantastic for Winter and cold days and the colour tends to be even more striking if the tights are thick. Sheer tights or thin tights provide a more gentle way to wear coloured tights, where the colour of the tights does not have to be the main focus of the outfit.

For a fun take on wearing coloured tights, it is possible to buy patterned tights or leggings for example leopard skin tights or stripy, multicoloured tights. Wearing patterned coloured tights can be particularly effective if the rest of your outfit is black or plain as they can easily become the focal point and feature of the outfit and make a fantastic conversation starter in the office or on a night out.

Sometimes buying tights can be a bit of a nightmare, simply because of the vast and varied choice available to customers. For example, are you looking for cotton tights, coloured tights, children’s tights, ballet tights, bridal tights, thick tights, thin tights, warm tights, stockings, plain tights, or patterned tights. It can be mind boggling! Often the choice of tights depends on the reason for buying them for example a Christmas party for work or for comfort wear. Once you have made the decision as to the purpose of the tights, narrowing down the styles and colours is much easier.

Many people overlook the option to buy tights as presents. Obviously, size is important to ensure the tights fit well and comfortably, but if you are confident you know a person’s size, then a few pairs of patterned tights or lace tights make an original present. Some people would shy away from buying lace tights for example or blue tights but if they were bought as a present, it may inspire the confidence to expand the range and type of tights of the wearer.

If you are buying tights for children, be aware of the fact that they need to be comfortable, flexible (particularly for infants and toddlers) and fairly durable so that they don’t get easily ruined when the child is playing or running. They are ideal for keeping children’s legs warm and won’t fall off the child’s foot and get lost (as socks often can). Comfort and warmth should be the main priority when buying tights for children.

Brown tights are not usually the first choice when looking to buy a new pair of tights, but they are often rejected or underrated when compared to more conventional black tights. However brown tights can be much more original and would look brilliant with brown skirts, or chocolate dresses and jumpers.

Brown is slightly less harsh than opaque black, as the shade is much warmer and softer. Brown tights provide a fantastic compromise between originality and normality. They are not bright enough to draw attention away from the outfit and so keep the focus of the outfit on the clothes, as they are usually a soft and subtle accessory rather than a bold statement. On the other hand, they are dark enough to still be slimming and flattering on the legs of the wearer and brown tights are more interesting and different than standard black tights.

Chocolate or brown tights can also have a different effect depending on whether the tights are opaque or sheer and what material they are made of. This can vary the shade of brown to look lighter or darker so remember to consider the material of the tights you are buying and not assume that there will be a standard shade of brown.

Brown is a great shade for tights, hinting at originality, but still appropriate for formal situations like meetings or job interviews. Wearing brown tights can make a subtle but powerful change to an outfit and update the style and impact of clothes that have become tired or boring, providing a welcome boost to your winter wardrobe.

As a bride, when planning your wedding outfit, understandably you are looking for perfection whether from the tiara on the top of your head to the shoes you’ll be wearing and everything in between. Bridal tights are an important factor in making legs look good, but must also be comfortable for the walk down the aisle and the drinking and celebrating afterwards.

The wide range of bridal tights available means that tights can meet individual requirements for each bride. For example, some brides may wish to wear tights which pull in and flatten the stomach providing support on their special day. Others will be looking for shades that perfectly match their outfit, and considering the perfect material and thickness of the tights.

There is also a varied range of bridal stockings and hold ups, as an alternative to tights, many with features such as lace tops or patterns. These can be designed for comfort or appearance, to continue to make the bride look good, even after she has taken her wedding dress off.

It is also important to consider the tights for bridesmaids, to ensure that the outfits match correctly, and that the bridesmaids are comfortable with their appearance. Sheer tights look great with delicate and formal dresses and could be either coloured or plain, depending on preference.

Bridal tights may not be the first thing that springs to a bride’s mind when planning her perfect day, but often they can be a valuable finishing touch to the outfit and help to ensure that the bride is comfortable and happy.
