Ballet tights are a specific form of hosiery worn by ballet dancers and are not to be confused with the more generic ‘dance tights’ which tend to have more of an appearance of leggings. Ballet tights are ergonomically designed with the activity in mind and have been a standard part of the dress code for this classical style of dance since the 1600s. They tend to be made from a blend of materials such as lycra, cotton and nylon, are traditionally opaque and come in two main styles; footless and footed.

Just as the dance itself is performed by men, women and children, ballet tights cater for the different sexes and sizes, and are available in a variety of colours from the more traditional white, nude and pink for women, and black for men. White tends to be a more popular colour as it is thought that darker colours such as black tend to hide the movements of the dancers, and white can be seen more clearly in a theatrical arena.

Some dancers prefer a high gloss whilst others may favour the more opaque, firming varieties, the latter tend to have a more practical use for professional dancers as they are easier to put on without laddering. Ballet tights tend to be sold exclusively by dancing specialists and ‘debut’, ‘Rumpf’ and ‘Domyos’ may be familiar names to many professionals.
