The dictionary definition of the word ‘opaque’ infers that if something is opaque, then it is difficult to see through, and in an almost literal sense, opaque tights conform to this.

In a fashionable sense, opaque tights are useful for those bright flashes of colour to highlight, contrast or complete any outfit. Whether they are a simple black or flesh colour, or pillar box red or tartan, they essentially hide bare flesh whilst retaining the natural shape of the legs. As a general rule of thumb, opaque refers to those tights with a denier (tightness of the weave) of 40 and above, but SemiOpaque tights are also widely popular and they can vary from 25 to 35 denier.

In a practical sense, opaque tights are ideal for colder climates as they give the wearer the freedom of skirts whilst keeping their legs warm. Very high denier tights can have the appearance of leggings and are as durable and flexible but in most cases have the advantage of reinforced toes. It is probably worth noting that opaque tights can hide a multitude of sins as well, and are popular for anyone who wants to cover up scars, pale skin or for anyone who simply hasn’t got round to ensuring that their legs are as smooth and hairfree as they could be.

Most department stores, pharmacists and many high street retailers will have a selection of opaque tights, particularly of the more traditional colours such as black or nude. However, for something a little brighter then Aristoc, Jonathan Aston and Pretty Polly all have a wide selection.
