Difference between Hold ups and Stockings
Stockings are close fitting garments for the foot and legs and come in pairs. There are sheer stockings, lace top stockings, fishnet stockings, Cuban heel stockings, and many more. All these require support or bands to hold them in place. Mostly, the garter belt is used which is fixed to the top of the stockings and tied to the waist to provide support. Stockings material can be nylon, wool, silk or cotton.
Hold ups are kind of stockings that do not need bands for holding them as they are made with their own elastic bands. Perhaps the difference between the two would be that stockings represent the ones that need a band or garter belt to hold them up.
Holdups manufacturers will normally assure you that they are safe and would not slip down the leg at all but I think the stockings are better because you will be more assured since you tie the suspenders on your own. Again, the elastic bands are made so tight to make sure they do not fall and this may hurt your legs or irritate the part of the skin they are in contact with. The only problem with the stockings is that it might show through your dress where you have tied the garter belt on your waist.
If varicose veins attack you more often, it is best to use the stockings and not the holdups as the holdups will only make your condition worse. Holdups will also be uncomfortable if you have big thighs as they are tight and would dig into your skin hence preventing blood from free circulation. As long as you get the right size of holdups for you, you should be okay with them. Sometimes doctors may recommend you wear holdups after a surgery to prevent blood from clotting.
